JOB SEARCH READINESS

Are you job search ready? Ask yourself the following questions:

Have I completed my self-assessment and do I know the type of work I am seeking (indoor, outdoor, sedentary activity, physical activity, full-time, part-time, etc.)?

Have I tailored my cover letter and resume to the job? Do I have a resume completed in electronic format along with my general paper format?

Do I have the correct name, title, and address of the hiring personnel before responding to job advertisements and direct mail out of my cover letters and resumes?

Am I keeping a record of my contacts to track the information I send out and receive?

Do I know how to find information about the company?

Have I adapted my job search to include the hidden as well as the visible job market?

Have I utilized my network of family, friends, neighbours, peers, former business associates, etc. to find job leads?

Have I contacted employers of interest by telephone and in person for information and opportunities?

Do I approach employers with a “Can you assist me in my job search”, attitude instead of a “Do you have any jobs” attitude?

Do I have my “30 second summary” perfected? Does it identify my aptitudes, accomplishments, education, and experience?

Am I creating negative barriers that may prevent me from networking with potential employers?
